The Site is located above the existing medical ward facility at the St.John’s Hospital. The requirement was to expand the facility by adding General wards at the 4th floor and Private ward rooms at the 5th and 6th floors. The existing structural system and elevation of the lower floors had to be retained as is. The proposition was to treat healing as a holistic experience where the external environment plays a key role in facilitating the same and to create an experience of recovery.

The key design consideration elements were :
1. Harnessing the potential of natural light across all facilities.
2. Creation of relief spaces across the floor plate
3. Exploring the role of color in a healthcare environment.
4. Inter-connectivity across spaces to enable a sense of belonging to a larger environment & to surpass the idea of being within only one space at a time.

Double volume courtyards are distributed across the floor and act as a design anchor, supported by public waiting areas. This breaks away from the doubly loaded corridor prototype and act as a mental refuge from the hospital atmosphere. These are accentuated by bright colors that acts as spatial markers, bringing in light to all the common areas enhancing the user experience.
